Kids consume digital content like they consumer oxygen. Apps, books, music, playthings, hardware, virtual worlds – to them it’s a natural part of their behavior, but to the industry it’s a world fraught with change and disruption.
We’ve got a lot on tap for 2014 but here are a few biggies to help you get your thinking caps on.
John Barbour, former CEO of ToyRUs and present CEO of Leapfrog will deliver this year’s opening remarks on a brave new world and how to fit the pieces together, make a few bucks and make some great product.
New Models of Play: Activision’s Skylanders showed the world a new for mixing digital and analog play. Disney’s Infinity adds its magical variation to the theme. We’ll unveil some other twists on play that will have you mesmerized.
Innovation and Invention: Mary Couzins, the creator of the Chicago Toy and Game Fair knows that being an inventor has its challenges. She’ll be leading the Inventor’s Workshop with the help of some of the most influential inventors in the business helping us wind our way through the complexities of everything from financing to packaging, store presence to patents.
Hardware for Hard Ages: For years Warren Buckleitner has led you on a journey through the newest gadgets and devices for kids. This year there are a bevy of new entries from Barbie tablets made by toy companies, to major CE companies like Samsung. Kurio one of the leaders in the kids tablets will be on hand to share their winning formula, too. And while the iPad still has the lion’s share of parental love, that picture is changing fast. If 2013 launched tablet wars you can only imagine that new form factors, second screens and great content will be the differentiating features in 2014.
The Maker Mentality: We like to call it constructivist’s construction kits, but kids just call it fun. From 3D printers, to Legos. to robots and some innovative new design kits we’re encouraging a new world of children to MAKE not jus consume content.
The End of the One App Wonder? Hunting down a best of breed app is not a job for the faint hearted. One of the most exciting things we’ve seen on the app front is new ways to get great content to kids via channels, subscriptions or aggregate models. Learn how they work and where you fit it.
